From Howard Street
to King Street:
Early in the last
(19th) century there resided at the north‑east corner a popular sausage
maker and ham curer, named Charles
Gottlieb Hering. Probably the row took it's name from this shop‑keeper. Row 89 almost excelled
kittywitches row for it's narrowness. At the junction of a cross row, there was
a brick arch spanning the row, and above was (still in 1927) a panel, and
indications of old property on south side. This was one of the narrowest rows
in the town, and contained some very
ancient houses. *2
At the north‑east
corner*1 was remaining in 1870 a house which escheated to the town, and at
the south‑east corner was another old house bearing on it's front
the initials H. N., but the new shop front hid the date which extended across in iron figures.
The 1936 row
survey says ‑ "Contains an
overhanging storey, a tall three storey house is the side of the end house in
row 87 referred to earlier".
